Overview

Running more than one Shopify app means living in several dashboards at once: the Partner Dashboard for earnings, the App Store for listings, a spreadsheet for keyword positions, and memory for everything else.

Shopify Partners Analytics is the tool I am building to pull that together: revenue and recurring revenue across all your apps, how each app is growing, where your listings rank for the searches that matter, and what changed on them.

Problem and idea

The problem

App developers make decisions with scattered numbers. Is MRR growing because of new installs or fewer uninstalls? Did a listing change help? Which keywords are slipping? The answers exist, but they are spread across tools that were not made to answer those questions together.

The idea

A single home base for the business side of building Shopify apps. Portfolio-wide revenue first, then drill into one app, one plan, one keyword. Built by someone who runs apps, for people who run apps.

My role

I am designing and building it: product scope, interface, data model and infrastructure. It is my main focus right now.

Planned areas

Where the product is heading. Not all of this exists yet.

  1. 01

    Revenue analytics

Revenue and MRR trends across apps, growth and change over time, subscription and plan analysis, and reporting for the whole portfolio.

  2. 02

    App analytics

App-level performance, growth trends, install and uninstall analysis where the data is available, and comparisons across apps.

  3. 03

    Keyword intelligence

Track App Store search positions, keyword performance and ranking history, and research the keywords competitors show up for.

  4. 04

    Listing management

Manage App Store listings, keep a history of what changed, and see how listing changes line up with performance.

  5. 05

    One view for many apps

Consolidated reporting so independent developers can see the whole business at once and make decisions faster.

Concept

An early illustration of the overview screen. The layout will change, and every number in it is made up.

A concept of the overview screen: revenue, installs and churn tiles, a revenue chart by app, keyword ranks and a listing change. All numbers are made up.

Technical notes

Data from many sources
Revenue, installs and App Store data each arrive in their own shape and on their own schedule. The hard part is reconciling them into one consistent timeline.
History matters
Keyword ranks and listing text only become useful over time, so the system has to record history reliably from day one.
Private by design
This is financial data about other people's businesses. It has to be handled with that level of care.
